Hearing Screenings

Approximately three in every 1,000 newborns can be born with hearing loss, making it the most frequently occurring birth defect in babies. NICS understands the importance of identifying hearing lost early. Left undetected, hearing impairments in infants can negatively impact speech and language acquisition, academic achievement, and social and emotional development. If detected, however, these negative impacts can be diminished and even eliminated through early intervention.

A NICS hearing screening tests for a mild hearing loss or greater. If a baby does not pass the hearing screening, it may indicate that an infant is at risk for hearing loss and should be referred for a diagnostic audiologic evaluation.
